Samenvatting

In this article a comparison is made between two Catholic prayer books from around 1800 AD and their authors. The comparison shows that an important change in the available prayer books took place at the beginning of the nineteenth century. This reflects the shift from a native, Jansenistically coloured Enlightenment to a more 'foreign' Enlightenment, which found its inspiration in the Katholische Aufklärung. For the Catholics of the Northern Netherlands the prayer books compiled by authors belonging to the last named 'movement' seem to have become rather quickly an attractive alternative for the other available books, both the older ones as well as those from the native Enlightenment.
