Juul Eijk is currently a PhD candidate at the Leiden Institute for Area Studies. His research project entitled Ally to Hegemon is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO, “Promoties in de geesteswetenschappen,” project number PGW.20.011). It asks how and why the Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty rearticulated concepts of rulership, which they used to relate to Tibet and Tibetan institutions over the first century of the Manchu-Tibetan relationship.
