Samenvatting

In this article change in integration and social differentiation of elites in two regions is compared. Social network-analysis is applied to the board-members of numerous organizations, councils and institutions in the provinces of Groningen and Noord-Brabant. The results of these analyses are interpreted from an institutional and a social perspective. The integration of elite-groups had a strong institutional character, but the social composition of the elites differentiated after 1875. Variation in elite dynamics between the two regions are the results of different urban structures, religious orientation of the populations and differences in social mobilization of non-elite-groups.
