This article deals with the word mars, which shows up in the works of the Middle Frisian writer Eelke Meinerts (1732-1810). It is shown that mars is a contraction of the adverbs/modal particles mar and r(e)is. Finally, it is argued that the occurrence of mars in the works of Eelke Meinerts may shed some light on the authorship of the two anonymous Middle Frisian works It libben fen Aagtje IJsbrants (1779) and De Burkerij of it Boere Bedrief (1774), both of which have been attributed to Eelke Meinerts.
