Abstract

In this article I have used the lexical and grammatical differences between
the first and (rewritten) second edition of Eelke Meinerts poem in Middle
Frisian Volle Gelok […] (1777) as a basis to try to unearth the author’s
(implicit) views on linguistic standardization. It has become apparent that
these include choosing a supradialectal variety and in particular keeping a
maximum distance to Dutch. This shows Eelke Meinerts to have what at first
sight appears to be a surprisingly modern ‘programme’.
