Theatre in seventeenth and eighteenth century Stockholm always had a strong political purpose, whether it be to educate a king or to educate a people. Theatre under Gustaf III came to include the whole public show of an enlightened, but absolute, monarchy. That this use [utile] should also be sweet [dulci] is our gain today.
