Samenvatting

Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork begun in 1993 among (il)legal Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands, three careers of illegal immigrants are distinguished. From the 35 (out of 52) recontacted in 2000, only a minority had not obtained relevant residence papers. Another 14 had returned to Turkey, 50% voluntarily and 50% by deportation. For those who had become legal residents, most had done so through marriage. The status transition of the illegal Turks was to a large extent determined by the qualities of the networks in which they were embedded. This resulted in marriage with partners from Germany, Switzerland, and even Australia. These transnational marriages illustrate the power of the Turkish transnational space. 19 References.
