Samenvatting

The existing systems of social security in Europe and the US, as well as the more traditional theoretical concepts behind these systems, now face increasing difficulties in adapting effectively to new social risks. In this article, four recent new social scientific approaches in the field of social policy are examined in terms of their possible contribution to the renewal of systems of social security. Attention is then paid to the risk approach of Anthony Giddens, the citizenship approach of U. Beck, the freedom approach of A. Sen, and the quality approach of W. Beck et al. It is concluded that the four alternatives as such cannot operate as alternative blueprints for the renewal of social security. Nevertheless, they offer valuable insights for further reflection. Besides they can also function as sensible frames of reference for the restructuring of traditional social security. 21 References. Adapted from the source document.
