Samenvatting

A discussion of the transition in roles from small firm proprietor to small business manager. Following a brief review of the organizational changes in small business structure caused by increasing industrialization in the Netherlands from 1850 to 1950, key productional patterns affecting small businesses from 1950 to 1980 are discussed, eg, increased DofL, the switch to flow processes, & the dominance of mass production. Small businesses have been encouraged by highly regulated & bureaucratic government interference with larger firms; however, small business owners, themselves faced with business growth & increasing regulation, are being forced to accept more managerial functions. 3 Tables.
