Samenvatting

An examination of the role of the family in research on the sociology of education, first presented as a paper at the Woudschoten Conference of March 1963. The School is, sociologically speaking, an institute which carries out a certain segment of the process of socialization of youth. It is a compulsory instit of society. Dutch research on the role of the family in education has concentrated on two aspects: (1) the choice of School in the transition from elementary to secondary education is largely determined by social environment: the higher the social position of the family, the better the chance of secondary education; and (2) success at School is also largely dependent on the social position of the parents. A research model for these problems is presented, with concentration on segments of the value system and monographic studies. I. Langnas.
