Samenvatting

A review is presented of recent sociological literature on Indonesia. The most important project of recent years has been 'Modjokuot' (the Javanese equivalent of 'Middletown'), in which a number of Amer sociologists studied the village of Pare in East Java in 1953-54. The participants in this project have produced important work in the following years. C. Geertz, in his The religion of Java (Glencoe, III, 1960), presented a scheme of 3 cultural patterns: (1) abangan (animist and syncretist); (2) santri (orthodox Islam) and (3) prijaji (traditional Javanese culture); in his Agricultural involution (Berkeley, Calif, 1963), Robert Jay studied the interaction of religion and politics in Rural Central Java and analyzed resistance to progress in his 'Religion and Politics in Rural Central Java,' Cultural Report Series, No. 12, 1963, Yale U; H. Geertz has done work on the Javanese family in The Javanese family. A study of kin- ship and socialization (Glencoe, Ill, 1961). An Englishman, L. H. Palmier, wrote 2 studies of Prajaji culture; and W. Skinner surveyed the Chinese communities of Semarang and Sukabumi. A number of Indonesian sociologists have published their works, some of them within the framework of the 'Cornell Modern Indonesia Project.' Other Amer publications include Selosoemardjan's large-scale survey of the Djokjakarta area in Social changes in Jogjakarta (Ithaca, NY, 1962), and W. Nitisastro's demographic study of Indonesia as a whole in Migration, population growth, and economic development in Indonesia (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1961). In the Netherlands, research on Indonesia has been hampered, until recently, by the impossibility of doing field work, due to the politocal situation. The scanty publication included a Med study by M. Timmer; a special issue on Java of the Journal of the Dutch Geographical Association; and a series, 'Selected studies on indonesia by Dutch scholars' published 1955-61 by W. van Hoeve in the Hague.
