Samenvatting

Reports the findings of an explorative content analysis of self-religion, based on essays written by students as well as survey questionnaires. The analysis reveals several discourses about the "self": of self-identity, of self-distinction, and of emotional steering. Further analysis confirms that it is impossible to speak of a single self-religion. Different self-discourses prove to be differently associated with (1) the degree to which one considers a quest for autonomy acceptable, (2) one's orientation toward the either of the two principal sociopolitical cleavages in Western society, and (3) how one perceives relations of friendship. 5 Tables, 34 References.
