Samenvatting

Italian ice cream parlors have become an integral part of Glasgow's (Scotland) recent history. In the People's Palace, a famous local museum, the interior of a 1930s Italian parlor has been reconstructed as proof of the warm relationships between the city and its Italian newcomers. Here, the position of the Italians is analyzed more closely, revealing that the Italians have not always been popular in Glasgow. The early Italian immigrants were considered to be undermining the British moral order by opening their shops on Sundays. It is not that these entrepreneurs represented a threat to local economic activities, for they vendors were developing a new market with very little local competition. It is suggested that a more general perspective -- the need to discipline and civilize newcomers, irrespective of their economic activities -- might yield more insight. 15 References.
