Samenvatting

The three most important influences on the author's development as a sociologist are listed, emphasizing the ways in which these works address general questions of good vs evil. Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment (1866), in which the moral implications of murdering a criminal are surveyed, is judged the most eloquent and insightful example. Sociological and psychiatric works from the 20th century addressing similar themes are addressed, notably Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's The Social Construction of Reality (1966) and Erving Goffman's The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1956). The work of Thomas Scheff and various Dutch critical psychiatrists (eg, Jan Foudraine) is also mentioned favorably. S. Paul
