Samenvatting

Important influences on the author's personal sociological development are recounted, pointing out the importance of intensive and regular observation techniques established by a previous career in meteorology. Although it is acknowledged that mathematical sociology tends to irreconcilably reduce reality, sociologists focusing on the observation of behavior with a limited number of variables are praised. Social psychologist Mulder, Herbert Simon's Administrative Behaviour (1945), De Groot's Methodologie (Methodology, 1962), Georg Homans's The Human Group (1951), and descriptive work in the tradition of Max Weber are deemed excellent examples.
