Samenvatting

Sociological works that have served as personal inspirations are discussed, noting their focus on systematicity and empirical thoroughness. (1) Van Doorn and Lammer's Moderne sociology ([Modern Sociology] 1959) is deemed an excellent and timeless introduction to methodologically and theoretically sound empirical research. (2) Johan Galtung's Theory and Methods of Social Research (1967) is remembered as an original but similarly well-founded reevaluation of traditional positivist principles that were often abandoned in favor of more politically colored approaches in the era in which the book was published. (3) Walter Buckley's Sociology and Modern Systems Theory (1967), in which Norbert Wiener and Ross Ashber's new science of cybernetics is applied to sociology, is judged a timely and necessary reminder of the neutrality of scientific principles that otherwise may be used to support conservative causes.
