Samenvatting

Three anthroposociological ethnographies that were important in the author's professional development are discussed. Jojada Verrips's En boven de polder de hemel ([And above the Polder the Sky] 1977), about local religion and politics in a small Dutch town, is commended for its beautiful composition and style as well as the thorough analysis of its subject matter. Loring M. Danforth's The Death Rituals of Rural Greece (1982), about Greek widows' death rituals for their late husbands, is praised for its textual aspects as well as for Alexander Tsiaras's photographs. Mattijs van de Port's Het einde van de wereld ([The End of the World] 1994), in which the backgrounds of the Yugoslavian wars of the 1990s are analyzed, is lauded for the way empirical data are integrated with more expository parts. The somewhat literary character of these three studies is also noted. S. Paul
