Samenvatting

Sociological works that have served as personal inspirations are listed, noting that, as one's professional career proceeds and one's intellectual capital increases, fewer eye-opening works appear to come along. It is also observed that works in which a new perspective is institutionalized tend to affect the experienced sociologist more deeply than works in which the first exploration of such new perspectives takes place. Particular praise goes to H. H. Hyman's Survey Design and Analysis (1955); J. A. A. van Doorn and C. J. Lammers's Moderne sociologie, systematiek en analyse ([Modern Sociology, Systematic Analyses] 1959); M. Hajoda, Paul F. Lazarsfeld, and H. Zeisel's Marienthal: The Sociography of an Unemployed Community (1971); A. D. Groot's Methodologie ([Methodology, 1961); J. Galtung's Theory and Methods of Social Research (1967); H. Schwartz and J. Jacobs's Qualitative Methodology: A Method to the Madness (1979); Anthony Giddens's Nieuwe regels voor de socioloigsche methode ([New Rules of Sociological Method] 1979); and H. G. v. d. Bunt's Officieren van justitie ([Officer of Justice] 1985), emphasizing their methodological innovations. S. Paul
