Following a more general survey of personal favorites in the field, the author's three favorite 20th-century sociological publications are listed: (1) Max Weber's Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft (Economy and Society) is deemed the most insightful analysis of the development of modern society. (2) Joseph Schumpeter's Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy is found the most convincing analysis of the evolutionary dynamics of economic life. (3) Norbert Elias's Ueber den Prozess der Zivilation (The Civilizing Process) is recommended for the way in which it shows how social developments affect individuals. S. Paul
