Samenvatting

An account of the French National Institute for Demographic Studies. It was founded by the French Government 'to study population in its quantitative and qualitative, static and dynamic aspects'; but it is an independent instit which selects its study themes. Its 27 investigators discuss their research at weekly meetings with the Director, Alfred Sauvy. The research program is centered upon the relations between population structure and HB. A systematic survey of 15,000 French families produced data on N of children desired (2.8), optimum N of children (3 to 6), etc. Another theme is the relation between ethnic groups in France, particularly important because of France's constant need of foreign workers. A. Sauvy has shown that the relative weakness of the econ'ly active strata in the French population makes a considerable immigration necessary; Girard and J. Stoetzel have investigated the att's and adaptations of Polish and Italian immigrant workers and their French hosts. I. Langnas.
