Samenvatting

There are 3 causes for the slow development of sociological research in Indonesia: (1) the focus of prewar tradition on ethnological research and customary law, (2) the present over-burdening of most Indonesian intellectuals, many of whom teach in more than one faculty; (3) objective social research is sometimes felt as critical of persons or situations which results in the choice of harmless topics or limitation of reports to small circles. Research is done by a Harvard group, headed by Rufus Hendon. The methods used are: a specially adapted TAT test and autobiographical material. The objectives are: relation towards the local sugar factory, the contrast between Formosa and Peking Chinese, religious trends, etc. The Canadian N. Keyfitz carried out an investigation on 30 Indonesian villages in cooperation with the economic faculty in Djakarta. The Institute for Social Research of the Law faculty made an inquiry on migration and colonization, material was collected on the increase of mixed marriages, and the social circumstances of Schools in Djakarta. The urbanization of Djakarta was a UNESCO project. Important sociological material is collected at the Instit for Social Research of the Village at Bogor. A great difficulty for social research in this country is the unapplicability of western research methods like the interview, which makes the connection with ethnological methods necessary. Ethnological approach, however, takes more time and gives rise to conflicts with governmental institutes. M.O.L. Klein.
