A reply to a critique by E. V. W. Vercruijsse of the author's use of the term 'social control.' Against the complaint that philosophical and epistemological assumptions should be placed at the beginning of the work, it is argued that such assumptions have no methodological priority. If the classification of social control employed differs from that of G. Gurvitch, it is because it is founded on theoretical assumptions that differ from those of Gurvitch. Finally, the use of the term 'social space' is defended as a means of 'placing' sociological data. I. Langnas.
