It is much easier to collect reliable information through an interview when one uses the technique of creating 'rapport'. The author tries to create rapport by applying the notion of the role. The actual behavior of a person towards others he calls (as Newcomb) 'performing a role'. This is often made easier because of the profession he represents. The sociologist, however, lacks this advantage; hence arises the problem: what exact role he is to play when interviewing someone. The author discusses different sorts of unfavorable situations and makes some suggestions about the manner in which the interviewer should proceed. H.P.M. Goddijn.
