Samenvatting

An attempt to develop a typology of stratification. Stratification studies are in an unsatisfactory state; the main reason is the absence of a generally accepted theory of stratification. The first step towards such a theory is to produce a good terminology, which is then to be tested by research. The research will also attempt to clarify the phenomena of stratification and produce concepts that will be the foundations of theories. Such theories must explain the causes of stratification, the reasons why some individuals or groups are regarded as higher or lower. The starting point of research should be spontaneous stratification which develops into an organized order of ranks. 3 types of stratification are proposed: (1) macrostratification, the global division of the whole group under investigation into upper, middle and lower strata; (2) mesostratification, according to professions and (esp in agrarian societies) property; (3) microstratification or stratification of personal and intimate relationships, eg, between shopkeepers on main streets and side streets, between peasants with 20 and those with 50 cows.
