Samenvatting

An introduction written for this issue of Sociologische Gids which is devoted to social stratification. The special issue shows that this problem has now attracted the attention of a generation of younger sociologists. This is thought to be due largely to the stimulus of the Amsterdam Congress of the International Sociological Assoc. (due to take place in 1956), with a section devoted to problems of vertical mobility, and to the research on professional hierarchies fostered by the Assoc. However, there is still inadequate research in such problems as the diff's between professional and social hierarchies, the causes of upward and downward mobility, the social evaluation of different forms of social mobility, etc. It is finally noted that some themes treated in articles contained in this issue will be discussed by the Congress.
