A report on a paper by N. N. Foote, W. R. Goldschmidt, R. T. Morris, M. Seeman and J. Shister, 'Alternative Assumptions in Stratification Research,' presented at the Liege Congress of the International Sociological Assoc. in 1953. The following 10 alternatives are suggested as starting points for research in social stratification: (1) stratification as a natural order or as result of political decisions; (2) criteria of power or prestige; (3) stratification on a local or a national basis; (4) an hierarchical or egalitarian bias; (5) one or several hierarchies in a society; (6) sociological or a psychological starting point; (7) clear-cut 'classes' or gradual transitions; (8) recognition and acceptance of status; (9) static and dynamic analysis; and (10) individual and group mobility.
