Samenvatting

An evaluation of research on social stratification, based on the analyses of T. Parsons, K. Davies and M. J. Levy, Jr. See stratification has a normative aspect; the norms are backed by strong PO. Norms are imposed by 'power,' ie, the ability to influence the behavior of others. See stratification is based on a social evaluation of individuals, their roles and positions. See evaluation of positions is founded upon the role of positions in society, the personal qualities which they require, the secondary qualities connected with them, and the cultural values of the evaluators. The position of J. A. A. Van Doorn (see SA 1020/D2586), that society is poly-hierarchical is accepted. It is proposed that research on social stratification observe 3 criteria: (1) careful definition of purpose-accurate hierarchies are to be sought rather than 'the' stratification, (2) see stratification does not exist in a vacuum-it is related to other aspects of social life, and (3) social stratification can best be defined by developing clear definitions of concepts like social position, SS, function, role, etc. I.
