Samenvatting

A review of Class, status and power. A reader in social stratification, R. Bendix and S. M. Lipset, Ed's, (Glencoe, Ill: Free Press, 1953). The book is found to contain much material dealing with research areas unknown or little known in the Netherlands and hence useful to the Dutch public. But it is also found to contain no clear leading ideas. The Ed's' Introduction presents 2 treatments of the social changes which followed the industrialization of the West in the 19th century: conservative and radical. The Ed's state that a 'reader' is not the place to treat this controversy in depth. They tend to assume that hierarchy implies stability and a status quo that is accepted by all the social groups concerned. An account is given of the contents of the 4 Parts of the book: I-Classics; II-Patterns of Power; III-Differential Class Behavior; IV-Comparative Social Structures. I. Langnas.
