Abnormal teaching of sociology in Yugoslavia, Sociology and research

Samenvatting

A review of Yugoslavian sociology since WWII. Sociology is practiced in Yugoslavia at Universities and gov. institutes. Academic teaching of sociology dates from 1952-53; previous to that it was submerged in a subject called 'theory of the state and of law.' It is now taught at the Universities of Ljubljana (faculties of law and philosophy) and Zagreb (faculty of law and Higher Professional School for Social Workers). It is due to be taught at Belgrade. The course includes: introductory concepts; social and economic patterns in history; social theories; history of sociology; SR and research. Little practical work has been done except at the Zagreb School, which conducted a survey on the causes of destitution in old age. Social research is also conducted by several gov. dept's; projects are conducted by groups of professional people, but not by sociologists, 'as such a profession up to now did not exist in the country.' However, there has been, of late, a cooperation between gov and academic experts, eg in a country-wide survey of conditions of working mothers organized jointly by the Dept of Health and Social Service of Croatia and the Zagreb School of Social Work.
