Samenvatting

An obituary on the German sociologist Gerhard Mackenroth (1903-1955). His academic career is reviewed since his 'habilitation' in 1932; it included teaching at various German Universities, interrupted by a spell of military service in WWII. Mackenroth, who had been a Rockefeller Fellowship student at several European Universities, believed that the social sciences should not become narrowly specialized and direct their research into the pol'al sphere. Sci was to be, according to him, the conscience of the nation. His conception of sociology was influenced by the ideas of the English econ'st Alfred Marshall; he held that sociology should be firmly anchored in econ's. A Bibliog is included of Mackenroth's contributions to various fields of social science: theoretical econ's; economic order; foreign trade; demography; industr sociology; fam policies; social policies; and statistics.
