Samenvatting

A critique of the article of D. Hazelhoff. It is claimed that the use of quantitative methods in sociology is much older than Hazelhoff thinks. V. Pareto, a collaborator of L. Walras who had pioneered in the use of mathematical methods in economics, treated relations between and within social groups in terms of mathematical functions in his Trattato di sociologia generale (Treatise of General Sociology, 1916) The view that econometry is achieved only by the 'filling in' of mathematical formulas by economic data is found unacceptable because it is said to be based on a false distinction between endogenous and exogenous factors.
