Samenvatting

When the same social non-religious task is being fulfilled by various religious groups at the same time within a society; as the sociological institutes of the various denominations reach out beyond their task of advising religious policy and do research on general social problems, this may be called an instance of verzuiling. The sociological study of verzuiling includes: (1) a study in the sociology of knowledge. How is verzuiling defined by various groups of the population? How is it seen in relation to democracy? (2) A study in the sociology of culture. How did verzuiling arise? In which cultural settings is it possible? (3) A functional analysis of the various forms of verzuiling. Latent functions may be dysfunctions in this respect. (4) What are the advantages and disadvantages of verzuiling for society in general? L. Turksma.
