Samenvatting

Verzuiling' is defined as the splitting up of social work along religious lines and the structural, ideological and functional aspects of this splitting. A new phase of this process set in after WWII as national org's of religious social work were founded. Local religious social boards were partially superseded. Conflicts may thus arise within a denomination between the old `philanthropists' and the new specialists'. The new Poor Law is going to give a much greater autonomy to religious institutions as against private ones. Thus the part of spiritual care that is social work may be subsidized by the state and the church gains new functions to compensate for the loss of others. Group exclusivity is furthered by this as are social control and conversion. A dysfunction is that as a consequence of the splitting up each religious institution for social work has personnel and budget difficulties. L. Turksma.
