Samenvatting

A critical evaluation of R. K. Merton's concept of function. The Mertonian system of functions and dysfunctions, manifest and latent functions, is outlined, and the following comments made: (1) The phenomenon which Merton describes as 'latent function' was known about for some time; Merton himself admits having 'discovered, not invented.' (2) In his distinction between manifest and latent functions, Merton has the merit of having clearly diff'iated between 'purpose' and 'motive' and based his distinction on the purposeful recognition or nonrecognition of the objective effects of phenomena. (3) J. A. A. Van Doorn has shown that a latent function can become manifest and vice-versa. (4) An application of Merton's concept of functions to the study of the religious community (a group) and church (an org) is used to introduce a further division into 'unique' and 'accessory' function.
