Samenvatting

An evaluation of the role of 'action studies' in industrial sociology. Action studies are defined as 'short-range, intensive, industrial-sociological studies of social changes occurring in enterprises at critical moments,' eg expansion or contraction, change of management, introduction of new work rules, etc. Already in 1917, F. S. Chapin advocated such 'natural exp's.' Action studies should be esp useful in the Netherlands, and in Europe generally, because industrial sociology is founded mostly on the experience of US big business, with little attention paid to the problems of smaller and more tradition-bound European enterprises. Because of their short duration, action studies are welcomed by enterprises; their cost can be considered as a scientific investment. It is, in any case, quite low-not more than 1,000 to 2,000 Dutch florins. They provide useful training for students of sociology. I. Langnas.
