Students of verzuiling do not ask why it happened in especially Holland, and why it still goes on. Holland had been a country of much particularism since the 17th century; not only politically, but Calvinism in this country showed the same tendency. Groups formerly discriminated against clung together even afterwards (Roman Cath's), but they are now gaining in importance. The industrial revolution in the Netherlands came too late for radical dechristianization. Why it still goes on, only research can answer. It may be that the industrialization of Rural communities led to a counter offensive of religious authorities. AA.
