Samenvatting

A review of recent English developments in the sociology of education. This branch of sociology is prominently represented in the series of books called International Library of Sociology and Social Reconstruction, founded by Karl Mannhein, and published by the London firm of Routledge and Kegan Paul. But it is not a prominent field in English Universities. There has been no Professor of the Sociology of Education in the country since 1952, when Lester Smith, Mannheim's successor, retired. While every English University has an Institute of Education, only London has a trained sociologist on its staff. The London School of Economics, under the impulse of D. V. Glass, has pioneered a series projects on the relations between the British educational system and British class structure. These studies failed to link up education with other aspects of society; this has been remedied to some extent as far as secondary Schools are concerned, by the author's Parity and prestige in English secondary Education (London, International Library of Sociology and Social Reconstruction, 1955). Another book in this series, Education and society: an introduction to the sociology of education by A. K. C. Ottaway (1953), is a useful textbook. I. Langnas.
