A brief survey of English sociology, based on an annotated list of 26 recent books. sociological theory in England has remained under the influence of L. T. Hobhouse (1864-1929), whose sociology was linked with philosophy. His 2 most influential disciples have been Morris Ginsberg and T. H. Marshall. More recently, English sociologists have been influenced by theoreticians from other countries: E. Durkheim (France), K. Mannheim (Germany), and T. Parsons (US). Practical work plays a very important part in English sociology; its achievements are presented under 4 main heads: (1) stratification and social mobility, (2) industrial sociology, (3) political sociology, (4) the functioning of social services, housing problems, urbanization, health services, etc. I.
