SUMMARY: The difference between the various meanings of the concept 'object' is stressed: a subject of and a purpose for social research. A general theory may blur an essential side of social phenomena: their historical character. In descriptive sociology the thematic approach is a generalizing one. It is possible, however, in an inductive methodology, to stress the typical characteristics of a general phenomenon as to time and place. There is a difference between typical and essential characteristics. The finding of typical characteristics is, however, as essential a part of social research as is the finding of the connections between the social phenomenon and the concepts of general sociology. L.
