A reply by the authors to a critique by P. Plodger. It contains their answers to 4 points made by Ploeger: (1) there is no agreement on the definition of social work, even among experts; (2) in the Netherlands, as in other countries, the institutional organization of social work has preceded the professionalization of social workers; (3) source material about systematized social work was used; no documentation exists on social work of the informal kind; (4) bur'ization as such is not condemned; its results are merely presented as far as social work is concerned.
