An attempt to find a common denominator for manifestations of youth unrest in a number of widely separate countries. Youth unrest has been reported in various European countries but also from Eastern Europe, eg the Russian 'hooligans.' In an attempt to find a common denominator, the sociological literature about youth is examined, with special reference to T. Parsons ('youth culture') and S. Eisenstadt ('generation groups'). Some nat'l manifestations of youth unrest are examined: (1) Israel (little manifest tension in spite of conditions that would favor it because of a pioneering atmosphere and perils to nationhood); (2) Eastern Europe (unrest of Russian youth tends to be anti-authority; nat'l revolt of Hungary incorporates student and worker youth); (3) Cyprus (youth participates in nat'l struggle of Greeks against British rulers). Youth needs to be studied dispassionately in the manner of S. Eisenstadt; such studies should throw light on the position of youth as indicator of social stability and instability. I. Langnas.
