Samenvatting

A study of the Nozem (We dandy), with some comparative evidence. The Nozem made his appearance in the Netherlands with the prosperity of the 1950's; he is a young worker who combines imitation of Me att's in matters like dress with a protest attitude against the Me domination. His case is compared with 4 historical parallels (the 'Spectatorial' or bourgeoisified Dutch workers of the early 18th century; the 18th cent Dutch servants; the aspiring Sinjo natives of the 19th century Dutch East Indies; and the Surinam house slaves of the 18-19th cent's); it is also analyzed with reference to the 'young worker' of newly affluent Europe as presented in the work of the Austrian Socialist sociologist K. Bednarik. It is concluded that the Nozem can be best explained in terms of his marginal existence between 2 social strata in a situation of SM. I. Langnas.
