Samenvatting

A critique of the book Oosterse economie (Eastern Economy) by Boeke recently published by Servire, the Hague, the Netherlands. The core of Boeke's book is a distinction between Western economy, in which Urban capitalism has absorbed Ru areas and created a single economic system, and Eastern economy, which remains dualistic because the modern economic sector has been unable to absorb the Rural areas, which still continue a primitive economy. Eg, in Indonesia some 10% of the population live in cities; 80 to 90% in a precapitalist village economy. Boeke holds that this duality is 'unchangeable'; the author maintains that it can and will be overcome, in the East as in the West, by the expansion of Urban capitalism. I. Langnas.
