Samenvatting

A report on 'the 1st sociological conference to be held in Israel in 2,000 years,' the Easter Conference held at the Eliezer Kaplan School in Jerusalem in Mar, 1957 and intended to be the 1st of an annual series. The Conference was organized by the Sociological Section of the Eliezer Kaplan School of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Israeli Institute for Applied Social research (mostly concerned with marketing and PO research, and the Szold Foundation (concentrates on youth work). 20 papers were presented in 5 sessions: (1) Youth: J. and T. Ellemers on inter-generational continuity of immigrants from Europe; E. Katz and A. Zlochower on contrasts between 2nd generations of European and Yemenite Jews; H. Feigin on socialization of children of 19 to 32 months in 2 kibbutzim; and M. Smilansky on methodology of research on elementary School dropouts. (2) Economic problems: J. Ben David on Ls and 'feminization' of the teaching profession; J. Shuval on diff ambitions of professional mobility in European and Oriental immigrants; M. Sandberg on diff's in faro budget structures being greater between rich and poor European Jews than between European and Oriental Jews as a whole; S. Carmi on methodological difficulties in research on professional org's. (3) Ethnic groups: P. Cohen on leadership among Yemenite Jews; H. Rosenfeld on the disintegration of the Rural Arab family; D. Wilmer on applied anthropology in the moshavim or cooperative settlements; R. Bar-Yoseph on Landsmannschaften-org's based on common local origin, as a means of absorbing immigrants. (4) Special problems: Y. Talmon-Garbier on relations between size of family and social structure in kibbutzim; U. G. Foa on balance in small groups in relation to foreman and workers; S. Herman on research on Amer students in Israel, esp during the Suez War; J. Levin on listening habits in Israel. (5) Local problems: Mrs. Palgi on relations between MD's and Med personnel without academic training, with suggestions on overcoming superiority feelings of the former; M. Lissak on complicated bur'tic relations between instructors and trainees in the Israeli Air Force; E. L. Guttman on the need to coordinate various types of social research and to change act's re certain 'despised' research areas; and S. N. Eisenstadt on the practical implications of social research in Israel. I. Langnas.
