An examination of some COMM problems which arise in the selection of Dutch marriage partners. Difficulties in social COMM arise when the 2 parties require an apparatus of persons who have the means needed to bring them together or a 'sounding board' that would provide a necessary framework. In the particular case of the choice of marriage partners, it must be borne in mind that in the Netherlands this is a matter for the persons concerned to decide as is the obtaining of the necessary contacts, so that the area of selection is practically unlimited. But difficulties arise when few suitable prospective partners are met or a relation of mutual confidence has to be established. Here, marriage advertisements and marriage bureau's can help by providing contacts and offering prospective marriage partners of suitable background. I. Langnas.
