Samenvatting

An examination of the COMM problems created for agri'al education by the existence of a segmented (ie plural) society, based on research in the Christiana area of Jamaica. This is a mountainous area inhabited by 10,000 peasants who try to earn a living from a deteriorating land. They are of West African origin, with some European and Caribbean Indian elements. Their life is dominated by a religion with Christian revivalist and voodoo features. Jamaica is a plural society, with an elite and a popular culture. In Christiana, the elite is concentrated in the villages, with their School's and churches. The consulenten (agri'al training officers) are often unaware of the existence of the 2 cultures. Their work would improve with such an awareness and with a greater respect for some features of popular culture which they would find, at first sight, strange or even repulsive. It would be useful to them to view such things sociologically. I. Langnas.
