Netherlands, Relationship between theoretical and practical sociology

Samenvatting

A discussion of the unsatisfactory relationship between theoretical and practical sociology in the Netherlands. The main reasons, in addition to the relatively recent development of sociology, are: (1) students who get their PhD break off contacts with their University; (2) professors of sociology were trained before the rapid development of the discipline in the last 10 years; (3) assistants have had no time to acquire experience; (4) the University set-up provides for little contact between teachers and researchers. On the basis of the author's Dutch, US, and Israeli experience, it is suggested that the remedy lies in: (a) more interchange between Universities and employers of practical research: (b) employment of students as part-time practical researchers; (c) post-doctoral courses and seminars at Universities; and (d) a system of 'guest professors,' alumni, or outsiders.
