Samenvatting

An account of contemporary sociological trends in France, based on a visit in 1958. French sociology has made considerable progress, which can be measured by the fact that the N of publications increased 8.6 times between 1919-24 and 1949-54. But the gap between theoretical and practical sociology is greater here than elsewhere, with only a few men such as G. Friedmann trying to bridge it. There is also an important gap between Paris and the provinces. Until recently, sociology was taught as part of philosophy, and even now only the Universities of Paris, Bordeaux and Strasbourg have sociology chairs. Sociology is also practiced at some institutes, eg the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. L'Annee Sociologique and Cahiers Internationaux de Sociologie are the chief publications. The progress of French sociology is reviewed in the following fields: demography (J. Stoetsel and A. Girard); ecology (P. H. Chombart de Lauwe); PO (French Instit of PO); work (A. Touraine, R. Aron and G. Friedmann); theory (G. Gurvich); leisure (J. Dumazedier); small groups (J. Maisonneuve); film (E. Morin); religion (G. Le Bras). The latest development is the increasing influence of US empirical sociology. I. Langnas.
