Samenvatting

A 2-part study of the role of the student in Dutch Universities, with special reference to Leiden, and an examination of the relevant literature. It is based on an 1957-58 study of Leiden students and their assoc's. The first part examines the relations between students and professors (marked by great SD, little integration and hierarchical rank diff's); between students and University scientific staff (largely determined by the position of the staff); and among the students themselves (only 2% complained of invasions of privacy; 25% wanted more contacts with other students). The 2nd part analyzes the role of the students in terms of: (1) expectations (the greater the distance between student and University, the more his expectations are molded by the traditional romantic image of the student); (2) conceptions (students' assoc's carry out the Mertonian function of 'anticipatory socialization'); and (3) behavior (patterns of traditional behavior are challenged by 'nihilism').
