Samenvatting

A survey article on the sociological study of leisure, based on an examination of the relevant literature. Although the word 'leisure' (loisir) appears in the Great French Encyclopedia of the 18th cent, the sociological study of leisure has lagged behind its growing importance for individuals and societies. The literature on leisure is grouped under 4 heads: (1) the relations between leisure and profession (working time and working conditions; prestige of the profession); (2) the connections between elements of social structure, eg SS, family and kinship, age group, social origin, education, religious affiliations, and leisure and its use; (3) the links between the values which determine the behavior and actions of groups and strata of the population in connection with leisure; and (4) the intensity of links between patterns of leisure use and regional frames of social life, eg cities, countryside, modern suburbs and housing for nonresident workers.
